Conservation of Great Lakes Wetlands

Conservation is a broad-reaching science that encompasses rehabilitation, creation, securement and all other efforts designed to protect and restore ecosystems. Conservation of Great Lakes coastal wetlands is gaining attention across the basin. Through coordinated partnerships, governments, non-governmental organizations, private sector interests, and communities frequently work together to rehabilitate and secure Great Lakes coastal wetlands.

There are numerous Great Lakes wetlands conservation initiatives underway throughout Canada and the United States. These are programs and action plans that are being implemented with the common goal of protecting Great Lakes wetlands from increasing stress from urban development, agriculture and many other human and natural sources.

Volunteers are an important part of wetlands conservation. Individuals are needed to identify and record bird and amphibian calls and sightings, activities essential to assessing trends in species populations and diversity (see Get Involved).
