The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) recognizes that strong and dynamic communities are key to fostering new business ventures, creating more employment opportunities and generating revenues. To that end, the involvement of Aboriginal peoples is crucial to ensure that Aboriginal communities can participate in the development of Atlantic Canada's economy.
Partnerships and Collaboration
ACOA works in collaboration with federal, provincial and community partners to provide Aboriginal peoples the tools they need to build and maintain vibrant communities.
The Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI) helps identify
and encourage initiatives designed to stimulate economic development in
Aboriginal communities within New Brunswick. For more information, visit
www.jedinb.ca.
In Nova Scotia, the Mi'kmaq-Nova Scotia-Canada Tripartite Forum
looks to strengthen relationships and resolve issues of mutual concern
affecting Mi'kmaw communities. More information can be found at www.tripartiteforum.com.
Access to Capital
ACOA supports Aboriginal business development, expansion and modernization through its Business Development Program. ACOA works closely with organizations such as the Ulnooweg Development Group Inc., which is Atlantic Canada's only Aboriginal Capital Corporation. Aboriginal entrepreneurs can also access financing through the Aboriginal Business Development Fund through the Community Business Development Corporations.
Access to Information
The Aboriginal Business Service Network (ABSN), funded
by ACOA, provides free-of-charge access to government information on business
programs, services and regulations. The resources available through the
ABSN are tailored to meet the unique requirements of Aboriginal clients.
