Vision
A healthy and intact boreal forest ecosystem in Canada that maintains
its natural range of biodiversity and supports forest-dependent communities.
The Western Boreal Conservation Initiative (WBCI) was established to
contribute to the conservation of Canada's western boreal forest.
The following are the strategic objectives for the first phase (2003-08)
of the Western Boreal Conservation Initiative:
- Produce knowledge and action that will contribute towards conservation
of boreal forests, and sustain or increase populations of migratory
birds in the boreal forest.
- Facilitate management toward conservation-based landscapes for the
boreal forest, based on principles of collaboration and partnership,
protected areas, and sustainable development.
- Ensure that no new species become at risk within the boreal forest,
and contribute to efforts to ensure recovery of boreal forests and their
biodiversity.
- Raise awareness and appreciation of boreal forests and their biodiversity.
- Position the Western Boreal Conservation Initiative within a future
national initiative with the capacity to address boreal conservation
issues across Canada.
The WBCI augments and complements external conservation initiatives through
partnerships, while building on experience and knowledge internally. Initially
focusing on the western boreal forest, WBCI will build toward a coordinated
national effort in the long term.
