Atlantic Provinces Severe Winter Weather Awareness

Severe Weather Reporting

Here is a list of the types of extreme summer weather conditions that Environment Canada is interested in hearing about through the toll-free severe weather reporting line at 1 (877) 815- 9900. Please report any of these conditions as soon as possible, when it is safe to do so. Even reports of these events well after they occur are useful to forecasters and they should therefore be reported.

  • Large Hail: grape size (or 15 mm in diameter or larger), or any hail causing damage
  • Strong Winds: 90 km/h gusts or greater, or any strong winds which cause damage to structures and trees
  • Heavy Rain: 25mm/hr or greater or 50 mm/3hrs or greater, or any heavy rain causing localized flooding
  • Tornado or Waterspout (tornado over water) and any damage.
  • Funnel-shaped Rotating Cloud beneath a thunderstorm
  • Rotating thunderstorms
  • Roaring Sounds occurring with a thunderstorm
  • Intense Lightning
