Rural Youth : Stayers, Leavers and Return Migrants
The study entitled Rural Youth: Stayers, Leavers and Returners was prepared by Statistics Canada and jointly
funded by the Rural Secretariat and ACOA. This report is one step in addressing the concern in many rural
communities in Atlantic Canada regarding the loss of young people and its effect on the local economy. The
report concludes that rural areas in the Atlantic provinces, along with Manitoba and Saskatchewan, are net
losers of their 15-29 population and that the problem is particularly acute in Newfoundland. Yet, there are
rural areas in Atlantic Canada and elsewhere in Canada where the 15-29 population has increased.
