The Forum of Labour Market Ministers (FLMM) was established in
1983. The rationale for having a Labour Market Forum comes from
the ongoing need to have interjurisdictional discussion and cooperation
on labour market issues.
Ministers have adopted the following objectives as the mandate
for the FLMM:
- To promote interjurisdictional cooperation on labour market
issues and to provide a forum to establish and meet common goals.
- To promote a highly skilled workforce with portable qualifications
through the development and expansion of interprovincial standards.
- To facilitate Canada's adaptation to changes in economic structure
and skill requirements.
- To provide an interjurisdictional link to participatory structures
such as labour force development boards.
The FLMM is co-chaired by the Federal Government and the Lead
Province where the lead is assumed on an east-to-west rotation
basis. Alberta is the current Lead Province for the FLMM. The
Forum has established different Task Teams to address certain
labour market issues. The Labour Mobility Coordinating Group
was established by the FLMM to coordinate implementation of the
Labour Mobility Chapter.
