PROJECT
Sources, Transport and Fate of Endocrine-disrupting Compounds in the St. Lawrence River (completed project)
Program: Urban Effluents
Objective
Considering Human Health
The objective of this project is to determine the sources, mode of transport and fate of new chemicals that are potentially disruptive to the human endocrine system. The study area covers the St. Lawrence River from Cornwall, Ontario to Quebec City. Effluents from the City of Montreal are targeted for study. Those of other municipalities will follow later. The project will focus on surfactants and steroids, although medications and other potentially harmful products may also be the subject of future studies.
More specifically, the project aims to:
- identify and quantify the hormone disruptors contained in certain urban effluents released to the river
- assess their temporal and spatial variations in the St. Lawrence ecosystem (surface water and sediments)
- find their main sources (Great Lakes, effluents)
- determine their distribution in liquid matrixes: effluents and surface water (dissolved and particulate phases) and their mode of transport
- determine their fate (degradation, bioavailability, persistence and bioaccumulation) in the river ecosystem.
