More Information on Immigration

In 2001, the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act became law; new regulations took effect on June 28, 2002. This legislation replaces the Immigration Act.

  • Immigrating to Canada - In 1998, 174,011 immigrants came to Canada. The number of immigrants allowed into Canada varies from year to year, based on several factors.

  • Studying in Canada - Are you interested in going to a Canadian university or college? Canada welcomes thousands of students each year to study in our internationally recognized schools.

  • Newcomers to Canada - Are you new to Canada and Prince Edward Island? The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada is here to help refugees and immigrants settle in Prince Edward Island. Some of the programs offered by the Association include:

    • Settlement Assistance Program (RAP)- This program provides services for the initial settlement needs of government sponsored refugees. These services include reception and interpreting services, finding housing, registering for English classes, helping with applications for social insurance, health services, and child tax credit, as well as helping with banking, budgeting, and shopping.
    • Employment Assistance Services - This program offers job search training skills, assists with writing resumés, helps newcomers find and retain work, and provides employment related information to newcomers and employers.
    • Immigrant Student Liason (ISL) Program - This program aims to assist immigrant and refugee students in adapting to their new environment, facilitates greater involvement of families who are unfamiliar with the school system and who wish to participate in their children's education, assists staff in meeting the special needs of immigrant students within the school system, and refers immigrant students and their familes to appropriate community services.

  • Visiting Canada - The tourism industry is the second largest and fastest growing industry in PEI. The Province's spectacular scenery, sandy beaches and gently rolling hills have contributed immensely to tourism. Our Visitors Guide is the best starting point for planning your vacation to Prince Edward Island.

  • Refugees - Canada is committed to protecting refugees and helping them adapt to life in Canada. The Canadian refugee system is fair and impartial, and is designed to protect both the applicants and Canadian people.

  • Moving Back to Canada - Information is available on the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency's website which you will find helpful if you are a resident of Canada who is returning after an absence of at least one year (CCRA considers a year to be one calendar year from your date of departure); or a former resident of Canada who has been a resident of another country for at least one.
