Driving in PEI if from another Jurisdiction or Country

When someone moves to PEI from another country, they must register as a new driver with the Department of Transportation and Public Works.

Individuals registering as new drivers from elsewhere in Canada, the United States, Germany, Austria and Switzerland do not have to register as new drivers on PEI. However, they must provide two pieces of residency documentation showing their PEI address and surrender their current driver's license. If from outside Canada and have not been previously licensed or held a Voluntary Identification card on Prince Edward Island, they must also provide immigration documents or proof of Canadian citizenship. You will be issued a PEI license of equivalent class for the regular cost of the license for the designated period.

For individuals coming from countries other than those mentioned above, and have never been licensed in the United Sates or Canada, complete testing (written, vision and driving) is required.

Once you receive your PEI license your original license is invalid. Licenses being surrendered will not be returned.
