Certification

Where can I find information about the certification of unions on PEI?

A group of employees may want to be represented by a union. They have two options: form their own trade union or join an existing one. The union then files a certification application with the Labour Relations Board. If the application meets all of the requirements, then the Board may schedule a vote for the employees. Should the majority of employees wish to be represented by that particular union, the Labour Board will certify the union. At that time the union will start negotiating a collective agreement with the employer. This agreement regulates the working conditions and wages of the employees.

The Labour Relations Board is established under the Prince Edward Island Labour Act.
