The Marine R&D; program has the following objectives:

  • to undertake R&D; in support of federal government policy development
  • to provide a basis for the development of regulations and standards related to marine safety, human factors, environmental protection, and risk management
  • to develop improvements in marine transportation, with emphasis on shipboard navigation systems, ice navigation, and predictive maintenance techniques
  • to develop and evaluate technological solutions to operational problems, particularly in the areas of search and rescue, certification of marine experts, inspection, and marine transportation systems
  • to investigate emerging technologies and to take advantage of national and international R&D; developments
