The main thrusts of the Rail R&D; program are:
- to support the goals of the Rail Safety Directorate through the development
of regulations and standards, particularly in the areas of crossing safety, human factors,
and operational safety
- to improve methods of inspection through the investigation of promising non-destructive
detection technologies
- to increase the energy efficiency of rail operations
- to investigate emerging technologies and to take advantage of national and international
R&D; developments that will increase the safety and efficiency of rail transportation
