Community Nutrition Services

Where can I find information about community nutrition services?

The purpose of the Community Nutrition Services Program is to improve the health and well-being of the population by improving eating habits, particularly of low income families and recipients of financial assistance. Special emphasis is placed on the low income or nutritionally high-risk pregnant woman at risk of a poor birth outcome, her infant, and infants and children with special therapeutic concerns.

Services Provided
The service is delivered by Community Nutritionists located in each regional Health Authority. Key activities include:

Prenatal Nutrition Intervention Program
Breast-feeding promotion and support
Nutrition and diet counselling for infants and children
Nutrition education
Nutrition consultation
Publications and community relations
Special diet allowance assessment

Public Access
The public can access this program through a referral from Social Workers, Physicians, Public Health Nurses and Financial Workers. The public can also contact the Nutritionist directly. Clients usually see the Nutritionists in their office, but in-home visits can be arranged under special circumstances. The service is free to all clients.
