PEI Pap Screening Program Where can I find information about the PEI Pap Screening Program?
More than 90 per cent of cervical cancer can be prevented by regular screening with the Pap test. In spite of access to the Pap test since the 1960s, the incidence of cervical cancer has been increasing in PEI, in contrast to the declining Canadian rate. Most cases of cervical cancer occur in women not regularly screened. This highlights the need for a more organized approach to cervical cancer screening on PEI.
Why should you have regular Pap tests?
- You will have no symptoms to let you know you need a Pap test.
- Cervical cancer can be prevented by having regular Pap tests. Having regular Pap tests is the best way you can make sure that changes to cells in your cervix are not missed and cancer doesn't develop.
- If you have regular Pap tests you can prevent cervical cancer and save your life!
When should you have Pap tests?
- You should start having regular Pap tests as soon as you become sexually active or you reach the age of 18.
- You should continue to have regular Pap tests even if you are no longer sexually active. You still need Pap tests even if you are past child-bearing age. Your Pap test should be repeated at least every two years until age 70.
- Even if you have had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), may still need regular Pap tests. A woman whose cervix is not completely removed, or a woman who has had abnormal results on previous Pap test, should continue to have regular Pap tests after a hysterectomy. Call you doctor to be sure.
How do you get a Pap test?

- make an appointment at the Pap Screening Clinic in Cornwall by calling 368-2010 or toll-free 1-866-818-7277. The Pap Screening Clinic is available to women between the ages of 18 and 69 who have not had a Pap test within the past two years.
