Children's Dental Care Program

Where can I find information about the Children's Dental Care Program?

Services covered:

  • Most basic dental services are covered.
  • Diagnostic - annual examinations, radiographs as required.
  • Treatment - fillings, extractions, root canal fillings on front teeth.
  • Emergency - basic emergency services for relief of pain or infection.
  • Preventive - annual cleaning and fluoride, oral health education, sealants.
  • Orthodontic - a limited program to treat minor orthodontic problems to the extent possible using removable appliances.
Eligibility

Prince Edward Island children aged 3 to 16 years inclusive.

Providers

  • Diagnostic and treatment services - Private dental offices and Dental Public Health clinics
  • Preventive services - Dental Public Health staff in clinics and in several schools across the Island. A preventive and interceptive orthodontic clinic is provided in Charlottetown by Dental Public Health.
How to access services:
  • Parents can choose to enroll children for diagnostic and treatment services at either a private dental office or a public health clinic.
  • Diagnostic and Treatment Services include examinations, x-rays, fillings, extractions, root canal fillings on front teeth, etc. Children and adolescents aged 3-16 are eligible. There is an annual registration fee of $15 to a maximum of $35 per family. Families are also expected to pay a 20% parent’s contribution on treatment services. Families with a net income of less than $30,000 can apply for an exemption to the parent’s contribution. Services are provided by private practice dentists and/or Dental Public Health clinics.
  • Preventive Services including oral health education, cleaning and topical fluoride application, and dental sealants are provided by Dental Public Health staff in preventive clinics and/or in many schools across the province. All children aged 3-16 are eligible, whether they are registered in the Children’s Dental Care Program or not. There is no cost to parents.
  • Children with orthodontic problems can be referred to the Dental Public Health Orthodontic Clinic by their private dentist or Dental Public Health clinic. At the orthodontic clinic, children will be assessed to see if they can be treated by the types of appliances used under this program. Parents are responsible for the laboratory cost of any appliances used.
