Phototherapy Phototherapy is a treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorders (S.A.D.) which is marked by episodes of depression, hypomania or mania during certain seasons. Research has shown that light therapy which mimics the effects of sunlight and increases daylight hours for patient. This is effective in altering moods to a more normal pattern. Maximum of 30 minutes per day of light therapy. No special clothing or eyeglasses are required, client just sits in front of light box for 10-30 mins., occasionally looking directly at it. Criteria For Use: regularly occurring Fall-Winter depressions which alternate with non-depressed Spring-Summer periods, a history of at least one major depressive episode, no other major psychiatric disorder, and no other social problem which might account for regular variations in mood. CAUTION: Clients with eye problems or potential eye problems (e.g.. Diabetes) should consult with their family physician prior to starting phototherapy. Referrals: Direct referrals from psychiatrists and mental counsellors are accepted. Referrals from family doctors will be accepted and assessed in the same way as any referral to the McGill Centre.
