Innovation and Commercialization in Atlantic Canada

A new study sponsored by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) shows that while Atlantic Canada has many innovation strengths, its economic competitiveness could be boosted further by encouraging the private sector to carry out more research and development (R&D;).

The study, titled Innovation and Commercialization in Atlantic Canada, was conducted by Dr. Alan Cornford of GPT Management Ltd., Marin Consultants Inc. and Gardner Pinfold Consultants Ltd. The purpose of the study was to assist Atlantic Canada in identifying ways to improve economic benefits to the region through well-focused R&D;, innovation and commercialization programs.

In undertaking the study, the authors consulted a wide range of innovation stakeholders in the region. Their objectives were: a) to examine the region's current technology commercialization practices and processes, including strengths and weaknesses, and to identify areas for improvement; and b) to examine best practices in technology commercialization and lessons learned from other jurisdictions that could be applicable to Atlantic Canada, including university-business linkages, infrastructure requirements and gaps, key sectors of opportunity and research strengths.
