Comparative Perspectives on Regional Development
March 31, 1998
Regional economic development has been, and continues to be, a focus of industrialized nations around the
world. This study, carried out for ACOA by the North American Policy Group at Dalhousie University,
examines current and past approaches to regional development policy and practices in some fifteen nations,
as well as the European Union. The researchers observe that, while approaches may vary somewhat from
country to country, virtually all nations are concerned with the development of local small and
medium-sized enterprizes. Furthermore, they suggest that the future of regional development policy in
all nations studied will be challenged by increasing economic globalization, increasing development of
politico-economic zones, the changing nature of economic production, and the changing nature of
government responsibilities.
