    Telework Pilot Project in Waterloo Region

    This project will facilitate the implementation of telework programs in 5 large workplaces in Waterloo Region. Through the project, it is expected that GHG emissions will be reduced by 255 tonnes.

    The Naturalizing Public Spaces Initiative will involve native species planting at 3 sites within the Rondeau Bay watershed.

    Strathroy Reservoir & Sydenham River Restoration

    Strathroy , Ontario
    This project will improve aquatic habitat in the Sydenham River in the upstream region of Strathroy, through the planting of native trees, shrubs, herbaceous, and aquatic species.

    West Elgin Habitat Restoration Project
    Elgin Stewardship Council
    Township of West Elgin, County of Elgin
    Landowners will convert 32.6 hectares of agricultural land to natural habitat in a biologically significant area of Elgin County. This restoration project will result in increased wildlife corridors, increased biodiversity of flora and fauna, and improved wetland/water function.

    This project will promote biodiversity by naturalizing a 0.7 hectare area, converting 0.45 hectares to meadow/woodland extension, providing an improved riparian buffer. Removal of the invasive European and Glossy Buckthorn will assist naturalization and promote a healthy ecosystem.

    Naturalizing Public Spaces Initiative
    Hopeful High-School Hooligans Program ('Triple-H')
    The Otesha Project
    Ottawa, Cobourg, Brighton, Peterborough, Newmarket, Brampton, and Mississauga
    The Hopeful High-School Hooligans Program ('Triple-H'), will train 85 youth presenters at 8 schools in Eastern and Southern Ontario, in a wide variety of sustainability issues from climate change to water conservation. These youth will also be trained in theatre and public speaking skills, so that they may present what they have learnt to their peers. Through the project, it is expected that approximately 600 youth will be educated on sustainability issues, and GHG emissions will be reduced by 170 tonnes.

    London
    The Go Green In Your Garden project will promote a range of ecological friendly practices in addition to naturalization principles. The project will target residents of the Coves Subwatershed, which has been designated as an Environmentally Significant Area.

    The project will encourage 200 residents of Hamilton to reduce personal greenhouse gas emissions by 675 tonnes by implementing a pledge program at 2 schools and attracting residents to participate in a series of community campaigns that offer action based incentives to participants that commit to take action.

    Issues including energy efficiency, buying local foods and reduced transportation will be addressed by the HealthyHomes Visit program and through 20 local workshops with a target reduction of 150 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

    Ontario Hospital Greenhouse Gas and Air Emission Challenge
    Ontario Hospital Association
    Twenty-five sites across Ontario
    Twenty-five hospitals across Ontario will take the challenge to reduce 12,500 tonnes of greenhouse gases by adopting pollution prevention methods and advanced technology that captures spent anesthetic gases. Moreover, 25 individuals will adopting energy efficient activities at home for an additional greenhouse gas savings of 250 tonnes

    Lawn Care that Won't Cost the Earth

    Markham
    York Region Environmental Alliance will promote environmentally sustainable practices through workshops, individual lawn care assessments, and pledge forms. There will be workshops held in Markham and the group will participate in 5 community events to promote lawn care alternatives. The project will produce 1,000 information pamphlets; 1,000 promotional fact sheets; 800 newsletters; 21 newspaper advertisements; and a total of 20 workshops and walkabouts. Participating children will be provided with a sticker book which explains the environmental impacts of traditional lawn care.

    Black Creek Restoration Coalition Project

    Downsview
    This project will involve the restoration of 5 sites along the Black Creek. Activities will include the planting of native species, as well as the construction of bird boxes and snake hibernacula. Education and outreach will also be key components.

    Total EcoAction contribution: $67,700

    GTA West Youth Stewardship Project
    Evergreen
    Mississauga and Oakville, Ontario
    Evergreen will engage 1000 youth volunteers in planting 5400 native trees and shrubs and 4800 wildflowers in seven public parks and natural areas in Mississauga and Oakville.

    Total EcoAction contribution: $44,900

    East Don and Taylor-Massey Creek Stewardship Project
    Friends of the Don East
    Toronto
    The East Don and Taylor-Massey Creek Stewardship Project will involve planting 2,650 native plants in riparian areas in the Don watershed. Education and awareness will be provided to local residents on water quality issues and environmental stewardship will be promoted.

    North Oxford Pits and Mounds Afforestation Project
    Millennium EcoCommunities Oxford Naturalization Committee
    North Oxford County
    'Pits and mounds' and 'vernal pools' will be created on 4.7 hectares of a retired agricultural field. With the help of 432 volunteers, the area will be naturalized and wildlife habitat will be improved by installing 8 bird boxes, planting 740 native trees/shrubs, 3000 native tree/shrub seeds and 10 acres of wildflower/grass seed mix plus.

    Ottawa , Ontario
    This project will promote the One Tonne Challenge (OTC) to 20 different faith communities in Ottawa . In all, 500 families will be signed up with the the goal of reducing their greenhouse gases by at least 1600 tonnes.

    Backyard Habitat Enhancement Project
    Friends of the Coves Subwatershed Inc.
    London , Ontario
    London ’s Coves Environmentally Sensitive Area will benefit as 425 native trees, shrubs and wildflowers will be planted, and non-native, invasive species will be removed.

    To improve shoreline health, the Network will educate homeowners on numerous issues including wildlife habitat creation, proper disposal of toxic substances, water conservation and safety.

    London ’s business community will gain information and guidance on climate change, energy efficiency, air quality and transportation alternatives with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1000 tonnes.

    Community Water Stewardship Program

    Sudbury , Muskoka and Rideau Canal , Ontario
    The Centre will restore and enhance water quality and wildlife habitat in the Sudbury , Muskoka and Rideau Canal areas by conducting 60 shoreline visits and completing 15 shoreline restorations. Additionally, 4,500 native trees and shrubs will be planted and 120 evaluation surveys completed.

    Creating 7.5 hectares of creek bank habitat, this project will plant 2,350 trees and shrubs and 23.5 kilograms of wildflower and grass seeds.

    Green End Up
    Friends of Watersheds Program
    Essex Region, Ontario
    Involving local schools, landowners and community groups, this project will restore some 3.52 hectares of land by planting 2,390 native trees and shrubs , and will educate 250 students on the importance of clean air, clean water and wildlife habitat .

    Intelligent Communities Efficient Practices

    Toronto , Ontario
    This project will engage members of Toronto ’s Hispanic community in the One-Tonne Challenge and encourage them to reduce their GHG emissions by one tonne per person. A total of 12 educational workshops will be held, 33 energy audits conducted and 48 action plans drafted.

    Jackman Cooling and Green Roof Project
    The Jackman Millennium Garden Committee - Jackman Avenue Public School (Ecole Jackman)
    Toronto, Ontario
    A "green roof" including 8,000 wildflowers will be installed atop Jackman Avenue Public School , reducing storm water runoff by approximately 10 per cent.

    Petrie Island, Ontario
    Community members and youth will work to restore 110 square metres of wetland habitat to conserve native amphibians and reptiles.

    Pickering, Ontario
    Aimed at restoring natural habitat at three Pickering area sites, this project will plant approximately 1200 native trees and shrubs along with 300 native aquatic plants and 100 wildflowers.

    This project will involve 1200 volunteers in planting 6500 native trees and shrubs to improve breeding grounds for Wood ducks, Eastern Screetch owls, and the Pileated woodpecker.

    Rouge Clean Air and Healthy Watershed Project
    Friends of the Rouge Watershed
    Eastern Greater Toronto Area, Scarborough, Markham, Pickering and Richmond Hill, Ontario
    Some 3000 students and multi-cultural community volunteers will plant 40,000 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers to expand and reconnect designated Ecologically Sensitive Areas and habitat for species at riskin the Rouge Park.

    South Field Restoration Project

    This effort will restore a former commercially-farmed field by planting 1,250 native trees and shrubs, along with grasses and wildflowers. In total, 4.85 hectares of land will be restored.

    Sudbury Trip Reduction Network

    This project will assist 30 small businesses to develop customized workplace trip reduction plans to shave 750,000 kilometres off their travel and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 165 tonnes.

    This project aims to sign up 200 households to reduce their residential greenhouse gas emissions and determine their progress and lifestyle changes over 12 months.

    Toronto Cycling Committee Bicycle Friendly Campuses
    Toronto Cycling Committee
    Toronto, Ontario
    By organizing sustainable transportation initiatives on their campuses, students will increase the number of bicycle trips by 10 per cent at each campus over the course of a year to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 400 tonnes.

    Burlington and Hamilton, Ontario
    Engaging some 200 volunteers, this project will restore approximately 5000 metres of stream corridor and plant some 3,000 native shrubs in the Hamilton and Burlington area.

    The Wave
    Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition
    Lake Simcoe, Ontario
    University students will inform community residents on how switching to lake-friendly fertilizers can help improve water quality by reducing the flow of phosphorous into Lake Simcoe .

    Wingham Ecological Park Project
    The Wingham Ecological Park Committee
    County of Huron, Ontario
    With the help of local schools and community groups, this project will plant 1,465 native trees and shrubs along with 5,700 native wildflowers and grasses to restore a one kilometre stretch of creekbank habitat and 0.4 hectares of upland habitat.

    EcoAction Teams Program - Phase Two

    Thunder Bay, North Bay, Sudbury, Peterborough, Oakville, Brampton, Mississauga, Kingston, Sarnia and Windsor.
    EcoAction contribution: $62,000

    The EcoAction Teams Program - Phase Two will involve the establishment of 40 EcoAction Teams in 10 cities across Ontario. Each Team will consist of approximately 12 households, which will participate in the One-Tonne Challenge by engaging in a variety of activities which support energy efficiency, conservation, and recycling. Through the project,it is expected that participants will collectively lower their GHG emissions by 2700 tonnes. Additionally, 827,520 kilograms of solid waste will be diverted from landfill, and water consumption will be reduced by 75,117,000 litres.

    EcoAction contribution: $71,000

    Following on the success of it's pilot, the Student Energy Challenge will work with 500 Grade 5 students at 20 schools across Ontario promoting the One-Tonne Challenge, teaching students how simple changes in their behaviour can reduce energy consumption, energy bills, and the burning of fossil fuels. This project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 170 tonnes a year.

    Reduce The Juice

    EcoAction contribution: $20,915

    This project will involve the local high school and the community of Shelburne in promoting energy conservation and renewable energy choices. The project will involve creating a learning centre at the school for renewable energy powered through the installation of a 0.5KW photovoltaic power system and a 1.5KW wind turbine on the roof. The second part of the project will engage 12 students, over an 8-week period to promote energy conservation in the community. The project will aim to achieve a 5% increase in renewable energy and a 5% reduction in electricity use over comparable rural communities by the end of the project.

    Nipissing Green Home Visit Program

    North Bay, Ontario
    EcoAction contribution: $18,000

    Greening Nipissing will promote the One-Tonne Challenge message and provide 200 North Bay residents with green home visits, with the goal of reducing energy consumption by 20%. The home visit provides advice and assistance on a wide range of environmental concerns, including energy conservation and efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and pollution prevention.

    Tonnes for Trees

    EcoAction contribution: $19,520

    The Tonnes for Trees project will engage the Westdale, Kirkendall, and Strathcona neighbourhoods in Hamilton, in the One-Tonne Challenge. Residents of these communities will be challenged to undertake actions which will result in reduced energy consumption. As an incentive, each community will earn two trees for every One-Tonne of GHGs reduced. Through the project, it is expected that 50 tonnes of GHGs will be reduced over the course of eight months.

    Cambridge, Ontario
    EcoAction contribution: $14,450

    Grade 9 & 10 students in Cambridge will promote the use of compact fluorescent bulbs by educating their neighbours on energy conservation and replacing an incandescent bulb with a free fluorescent bulb. Replacing 5000 incandescent bulbs will result in a savings of 150 tonnes of greenhouse gases. A student-produced brochure promoting energy conservation, the One-Tonne Challenge and practical ways to save energy and money will be distributed to residents.

    EcoAction contribution: $20,000

    This project will target the Chinese Canadian community in the Greater Toronto Area, and provide education and outreach to citizens on climate change and GHG reductions. The project will involve demonstrations of alternative forms of energy, and will result in participants purchasing and using approximately 4,000 compact fluorescent lamps and 100 Luminosity Enhancement Jackets. Through the project, it is expected that 1,533 tonnes of carbon dioxide, and 46 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions will be reduced.

    S.T.E.P. 2

    EcoAction contribution: $20,000

    The S.T.E.P 2 project will work with four Toronto high schools to engage students in an educational and community-based initiative that will help reduce GHGs as well as increase their daily physical activity levels. Goals of the project include encouraging a shift from automobile trips to active travel tips for students; identifying specific transportation needs of youth and addressing mobility barriers; proving safer environments for students to use active transportation; engaging youth in a dialogue about the One-Tonne Challenge, climate change and transportation.

    Social Housing Tenants as Environmental Leaders: Toronto Community Housing and the One-Tonne Challenge (TCHC)

    EcoAction contribution: $23,000

    The project will reduce energy use and harmful emissions by promoting the One-Tonne Challenge message through an educational outreach program. The program will be implemented in conjunction with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation's energy efficiency retrofits taking place in their buildings. The project will also recruit and train TCHC tenants as community animators, develop appropriate materials and outreach tools, and develop an incentive program for inter-building competitions on energy use reductions and tenant success in meeting the One-Tonne Challenge. Building retrofits combined with the tenant education program will reduce energy consumption in the building by approximately 20%.

    Niagara Eco-Capacity Project

    EcoAction contribution: $42,780

    This project will reduce 2,000 tonnes of GHG emissions and improve air quality in the Niagara area through voluntary commitments made by interested and informed stakeholders and citizens who take up Canada's One-Tonne Challenge. Three key performance areas will be targeted including anti-idling, light bulb replacement and green purchasing. Each area will establish One-Tonne Challenge GHG reduction targets, and follow up visits will be performed to assist with monitoring results and to ensure behaviour change is sustained.

    20/20 Community Pilot

    The Greater Toronto Area
    EcoAction contribution: $80,000

    This project will enable up to 10 local community groups across the Greater Toronto Area, including those whose first language is not English, to organize and deliver the 20/20 The Way to Clean Air campaign and the One-Tonne Challenge in their local communities. It is expected that approximately 20,000 households will participate in the project, resulting in a cumulative GHG reduction of 30,000 tonnes over 24 months.

    Active Schools for a Cleaner, Healthier Peterborough

    Peterborough, Ontario
    EcoAction contribution: $30,000

    Active Schools for a Cleaner Healthier Peterborough will facilitate the reduction of C02 and other air borne pollutants around school zones in the City of Peterborough. The project will involve a variety of activities to involve students in the One-Tonne Challenge, by teaching them about the impacts of vehicle emissions and the benefits of public transportation. Through the project, 3,700 personal vehicle trips will be eliminated, and idling of vehicles in school zones will be reduced by 60%, resulting in a total reduction of 205 tonnes of C02.

    Great Lakes Regional Tour

    Thirteen communities along Lake Huron and Lake Erie.
    EcoAction contribution: $30,600

    The Great Lakes Regional Tour will bring together 15 Ontario youth to bicycle 1000 km along Lake Erie and Lake Huron. The purpose of the journey will be to promote the One-Tonne Challenge by modelling a lifestyle which emits the least GHGs possible. Education and outreach will be provided to youth in 13 communities on how simple changes in daily activities can result in substantial improvements to air quality. Through the project, it is expected that 645 tonnes of GHGs will be reduced.

    WattWize!
    Citizens' Environment Watch and University of Toronto Sustainability Office

    EcoAction contribution: $41,615

    The WattWize! project will work with local educators, to involve Toronto high school students in the One-Tonne Challenge. Students will be provided with electrical metres and educational materials to assess plugload consumption in their schools. They will then be encouraged to create and implement energy conservation work plans, and calculate financial savings and GHG reductions over the course of 24 months.

    Sustaining Energy Efficiency At the University of Toronto: Turning On to Turning Off

    EcoAction contribution: $45,000

    The primary goal of the project is to promote campus stewardship and inspire members of the University to take responsibility for their campus by reducing their GHG emissions through reduced energy consumption. The project will have two components. In the first phase, three pilot areas will be identified to monitor energy reductions through equipment retrofits and behavioural change. The second phase will be a campus-wide public education and education program that will encourage energy efficiency reductions through a variety of sub-projects. The project will provide verifiable and measurable results regarding campus energy behaviour and electricity reduction and encourage community members to embrace a conservation culture and make personal commitments to achieve one-tonne reductions in GHG's. The target of a 5% reduction of electricity consumption will lead to a 3000 tonnes reduction of GHG's.

    Cleaning Our Environment!

    The Greater Toronto Area
    EcoAction contribution: $24,000

    The "Cleaning Our Environment!" project will engage several ethno-specific communities within the Greater Toronto Area in the One-Tonne Challenge. Approximately 200 participants will take part in education and outreach activities, and will be encouraged to undertake actions in their daily lives which are geared toward reducing GHG emissions. Through the project, it is expected that 200 tonnes of GHGs will be reduced over 12 months.

    EcoAction Brigades (Teams)
    Centre d'alphabétisation et d'action sociocommunautaire de l'Ontario [CASCO] (Community Literacy and Socio-Action Centre)
    Ottawa, Ontario
    EcoAction contribution: $40,000

    The project proposes to create EcoAction Brigades in 20 neighbourhoods in Ottawa reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 10 000 tonnes. Each Brigade leader will have the mission to recruit four or five families in his/her immediate neighbourhood who will commit to meeting the One-Tonne Challenge over the duration of the project.

    Two Site Restoration of Junction Creek

    EcoAction Contribution: $20,000

    The project will conduct restoration activities at two sites along Junction Creek. The first site will see limestone added to raise the pH of the soils. The region will be seeded with a ground cover mix to establish vegetation on the slope. At the second site, a stretch of streambank that was seriously eroded will be pulled back to a more natural slope and seeded. Trees and shrubs will be planted to stabilize the slope further once the ground cover has established.

    In collaboration with five high schools, five landowners, and the Essex Region Conservation Authority, the Friends of Watersheds groups will plant 6 800 native trees and shrubs, 10 000 native seeds, in order to restore 7.4 hectares of land to a natural state.

    EcoAction Contribution: $27,582

    This project will provide education on watershed stewardship to approximately 6,000 students and 200 volunteers at Mount Albion Conservation Area in Hamilton. The project will involve several restoration activities including the planting of 10,000 native trees and shrubs, invasive species removal, the establishment of .47 hectares of prairie grassland, and the installation of more than 50 wildlife habitat structures.

    Oxbow Creek Enhancement Project

    EcoAction Contribution: $22,000

    This group will involve more than 1000 students/volunteers in the naturalization of 1.25 hectares at three sites in the London area by planting over 1800 trees and shrubs.

    EcoAction Contribution: $6,000

    The Tree West Nissouri 2004 Spring Plant will involve approximately 40 community volunteers in the planting of 1 000 hardwood roadside trees in the Township of Thames Centre. These trees will replace those which have died, and will in time provide habitat for native bird species and act as wind breaks.

    This project will raise awareness of the One Tonne Challenge by hosting challenges between schools and local stewardship groups. Evergreen will work with a group of 75 volunteers and support them in their efforts to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 75 tonnes. Participant surveys will evaluate how behaviour changed as a result of climate change education.

    Urban Stream Buffer Project

    The Urban Stream Buffer Project will improve natural corridors, enhance streambank areas, and promote land stewardship to the residents of Brockville, Gananoque, Kingston, and Loyalist Township. The project will involve streambank buffer planting and bioengineering along 1 200 meters of Little Cataraqui Creek. Over 200 volunteers will participate in the project.

    The Academia to Action Project

    The Academia to Action Project will involve working with students, faculty, and administration at 5 Ontario university campuses, to develop and implement emission reduction plans. These plans will involve setting 2 year reduction targets based on comprehensive feasibility studies of different reduction measures. The project will serve as a model for other campuses across the province, and will result in a 5% GHG emission reduction over 2 years.

    Naturalization of Coronation Park

    This project will involve more than 20 students in the naturalization of a swale in Coronation Park by the planting of 1000 sedges, grasses and forbs.

    Trees for Peace Shoreline Restoration Project

    Shoreline assessments will be conducted on fifty private properties in Grenville County. This project will aim to educate property owners, residents, cottagers and farmers, on the importance of sound land stewardship practices and their impact on water quality. Site plans and resource packages on invasive species, native plants, low impact docks, green boating, nutrient and bacteria loading, sedimentation, drainage and erosion will be tailored for each property. The Stewardship Council will also conduct several school presentations on clean water. Twenty-five thousand native trees and shrubs will be planted by the Stewardship Council, community partners and local school children to improve water quality and to restore riparian and watershed zones along the Kemptville Creek and St. Lawrence River.

    Corporate Green Fleet Project

    Nine hundred employees in three corporations will be involved in the Community Bike Network's Green Fleet Project. By promoting the importance of more earth-friendly modes of transportation, CBN will work with selected corporate partners to create more bike-friendly workplaces. CBN will provide a fleet of 25 bikes, educational materials, bicycle maintenance, surveys and a nomination for a Friendly Business Award from the City of Toronto to each participating business. As a result of cycling instead of driving, the project will divert 10 metric tonnes of Carbon Dioxide, 183 metric tonnes of Carbon Monoxide, 24 metric tonnes of Volatile Organic Compounds and 15 metric tonnes of Nitrogen Oxide from Toronto's air in the first year of this project.

    Credit River Watershed Rehabilitation Project - Phase 3

    The Credit River Watershed Rehabilitation Project - Phase 3 will involve the reforestation of 6 sites along the Credit River. Through the project, approximately 4 600 native trees and 20 000 native seedlings will be planted along 12 000 meters of the Credit River.

    Richmond Hill Community Stewardship Project

    The project will restore urban wildlife habitat and enhance biodiversity in three Richmond Hill natural areas by engaging 1 000 volunteers in planting 4 500 native trees and shrubs, and 5 000 wildflowers at 33 events. The group will also conduct 16 in-class presentations, 18 workshops and 12 interpretive walks.

    In an effort to improve water quality and fish habitat in the Rainy River watershed, Rainy River First Nations will control cattle access to Rainy River tributaries, and promote the Adopt-A-River program that will remove waste along 20 kilometres of shoreline.

    This project will provide public education and outreach on the benefits of local food systems and sustainable transportation alternatives. Project promotion will take place at the Sudbury Market Square and at other appropriate venues in the Sudbury area. A Food Miles Shopping Planner will be developed based on 80 surveys to determine baseline shopping and transportation practices. Project participants will be surveyed again at the end of the project to evaluate behaviour change and to calculate GHG emission reductions.

    Shifting Gears: Creating a Cycling Culture in Kingston

    EcoAction Contribution: $18,869

    The group will focus on raising the awareness of cycling as a viable, healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transportation and will work with groups in the community to change commuting patterns of behaviour in order to increase cycling in the Kingston area. The group will also work with the City Of Kingston to determine greenhouse gas emission reductions that result from this project.

    Clean Air, Green Gardens Project

    This project will offer Green Garden Visits to home and community groups and assist them in implementing actions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a new zero emission approach to yard gardening. Group will partner with 20 community groups, attend 30 local events and work with 200 new homeowners. Project will lead to emission reductions of 81,450 kg of CO2 and replace 21,500 square metres of lawns and grass in homes and community spaces in North Toronto. Work bikes, hand tools and native plants will be used in the project.

    Markham-Newmarket Idle-Free Community Challenge

    EcoAction Contribution: $20,500

    York Region Environmental Alliance will challenge residents of Newmarket and Markham to stop vehicle idling. Their goal is to obtain a minimum of 500 pledges from each community, resulting in a greenhouse gas reduction of 624 000 kilograms. Pledges will be recorded on websites and the municipality that receives the most pledges from residents will win the challenge.
