2005 Annual Employment Equity Report

Communications, Labour Program

The Government of Canada released the latest report on the Employment Equity Act on June 15, 2006 . This report, like previous ones, shows sustained improvements in the representation of the four designated groups: women, members of visible minorities, Aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities in federally regulated workplaces. This year’s report also commemorates the 20 th anniversary of the Employment Equity Act.

Canadian Government Funds Project to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labour

Communications, Labour Program

On World Day Against Child Labour held on June 12, 2006, the Government of Canada announced a grant of $600,000 to the International Labour Organization for a project to prevent and eliminate the worst forms of child labour in four Central American countries: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The grant is provided to the Organization’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour under Human Resources and Social Development Canada’s International Trade and Labour Program.

According to the International Labour Organization’s recent Global Report, The end of child labour: Withinreach, the number of children involved in the worst forms of labour around the world has decreased for the first time across the globe. The report concludes that if the current pace of decline is maintained and the global momentum to stop child labour continues, child labour in most of its worst forms could be eliminated in 10 years.
