What is the Program About?
It provides funding to First Nations to address major environmental issues of an operational nature affecting reserve land, water or air and areas used for traditional practices like hunting, trapping and fishing. Funding is also available for participation in environmental assessment processes for activities on and off reserve lands which could harm Indian lands. Funding is only given when groups approach Indian and Northern Affairs as a last resort. Letters of request for funding from the group, and response letters of refusal of funding from other sources are required.

Who can Apply?
Indian bands, tribal councils in all provinces, Innu and Inuit of Labrador, and other associations of bands or communities, institutions or organizations mandated by bands or communities to address environmental issues on their behalf.

What Projects can be Funded?
Examples include:

  • assessment/analysis of community impacts
  • studies on major developments off reserve affecting reserves and traditional use areas
  • participation in preparatory stages of provincial environmental reviews for projects that may have negative impacts on reserve areas, and related travel and accommodation expenses
  • consultation with experts, such as biologists, environmental consultants about potential environmental impacts
  • negotiations, interventions and presentations to public hearings and meetings
What is the Maximum Funding Available?
Funding ranges from $3,000 to $100,000

What are the Deadlines for Applying?
There are no deadlines. An application form is required and is available from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.
