Medical Education Program Medical School Seats:
- Two medical school seats have been purchased at Memorial University in Newfoundland for the exclusive use of PEI applicants.
- An informal agreement exists with Dalhousie University in Halifax whereby approximately six applicants from PEI are accepted on a yearly basis. Discussions are on-going to enter into a more formalized arrangement.
- One Francophone Islander is accepted at a Quebec medical school on a yearly basis.
MD Re-Entry:
- Family physicians who wish to pursue specialty training in areas of need are offered assistance through return-for-service contracts.
Continuing Medical Education Programs:
- Funding is provided to the Medical Society of PEI to support the Clinical Fellowship Fund, enabling physicians to participate in medical education programs.
- A financial assistance program was developed that provides financial assistance to medical students and residents with costs for accommodations while completing clinical rotations on the Island. Supplementary funding for travel is provided in cooperation with Dalhousie University Non-Metro Funding Program.
- A stethoscope package is offered to first year Island students and a book allowance for second and third year Island students studying in Canadian medical schools.
- Gym passes are provided for students/residents while completing their clinical rotation.
Training Opportunities:
- There are 19 family medicine preceptors who will provide core and elective clinical rotations for medical students and residents.
- There are 17 speciality preceptors who will provide core and elective clinical rotations for medical students and residents.
- A partnership has been established between Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the Northumberland Training Unit, a Dalhousie University Medical School training unit located in Moncton.
- Relationships have also been developed with other medical schools across Canada.
