Wildlife Enforcement in Ontario

The enforcement of wildlife protection legislation in Canada is shared between the provincial and federal governments. In Ontario, Game Officers enforce federal wildlife laws and Conservation Officers enforce provincial wildlife laws. To ensure that wildlife are well protected, Game Officers are designated to enforce both federal and provincial wildlife protection laws. Conservation Officers enforce the federal laws pertaining to migratory bird conservation. Often, the two agencies work jointly on wildlife enforcement matters.

In Ontario, federal Game Officers are members of the Wildlife Enforcement Division, part of the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS). Game Officers perform on-site inspections and investigations, and patrol the province to protect wild plants and animals from illegal hunting and over-exploitation. CWS manages wildlife matters that are the responsibility of the federal government, including the protection and management of migratory birds, nationally significant habitat and endangered species.

Everyone can play a role in wildlife conservation in Ontario.
