Sound science is critical to conservation.
The success of EHJV and of NAWMP depends on a strong biological
foundation. The EHJV's many partner organizations have distinct
roles to play within the Joint Venture. One major role of
the Canadian Wildlife Service is to contribute specific expertise
on migratory birds and their habitats. The Canadian Wildlife
Service monitors populations of waterfowl and other wetland-dependent
species through an extensive survey program, in order to determine
population trends and contribute to the knowledge of wetland
habitat requirements for these species. This information is
useful for all partners in setting habitat conservation priorities
and objectives, as well as targeting on-the-ground habitat
management activities. The Ontario EHJV's biological foundation
is continually strengthened through a systematic process of
planning, implementation and evaluation.
Landscape Approach

To conserve waterfowl, there must be adequate
habitat.
The NAWMP identifies the landscape conditions necessary to
sustain waterfowl. Reviewing habitat at the landscape level
means that wildlife conservation requirements are balanced
with human socio-economic requirements for the best possible
outcome. The goal is to promote conditions that sustain and
benefit waterfowl and other wetland species, including species
at risk of extinction. Since many economic activities affect
waterfowl habitat – such as agriculture, forestry, urban
development, mining and fishing – EHJV partners attempt
to influence planning for economic and social policies that
affect the landscape.
Partnerships
Successful conservation depends on strong
partnerships.
The NAWMP has pioneered a partnership approach, forging alliances
among sectors and communities to achieve sustainable landscape
management. Progress has relied on conservation organizations
joining forces with various levels of government, private
sector, individuals and landowners.
