Searching for a job requires much dedication to the task if you are to be successful. It is important to understand the job market and how to locate and apply for work.

Job search is a process of analyzing occupations that are of interest to you and matching them with your needs and skills. The following steps may assist you in this process.

Steps

  1. Identify your interests, skills, and job goals - the type of work you want to do. You may want to review Step 1 in Career Planning a partner category of workinfonet-PEI.
  2. Identify and review work search techniques. Click on Worksearch to access an excellent site for assistance in developing good work search techniques.
  3. Identify job options. There are many internet sites that provide job sources, job listings, and information on how to access these jobs. Under Finding Work below, a number of sites have been listed for your assistance, some listed within the Quick Reference Guide and others immediately following.
  4. Click on Wage and Salary Survey for information on wages paid by employers in Prince Edward Island.

Steps

  1. Quick Reference Guide for:
    a) Summer jobs for students
    Jobs Sponsored by the Provincial Government. Jobs sponsored by the Federal Government. The following site will provide more detailed information. Jobs listed by employers. Visit one of the HRDC Offices for Students. The offices are open from May to September.

    b) Jobs for Recent Graduates The following sites will provide more information.

    c) Full Time Employment Click on the sites of your choice from one or more of the six categories in Step 5. You may want to start by clicking on CanadaJobs, an extensive collection of current job listings in one place, or Careertransit, a new job search web site dedicated to helping people find careers/candidates in the Atlantic Provinces.
  2. Prepare or update your resume and begin the process of contacting employers. Click on Resume for assistance in preparing a resume. Many of the sites listed under the six categories in Step 5 permit you to post your Resume on the site, or to register for possible job matching.
  3. If you plan to relocate to Prince Edward Island, or another Canadian Province or Territory, click on Work Destinations for details on qualifications required to work in the trades and professions, and for other pertinent information.
  4. In addition to the sites names within the above steps, following is a list of sites that contain information on labour market conditions and jobs that may be available in occupations of interest to you. The sites are organized into seven categories to make your search easier.

    Global ESL Opportunities Network--GEON is a Canadian-owned service that assists individuals who are seeking employment in the English as a Second Language field.
    The English Job Maze--is a free International ESL/EFL job & information site for ESL/EFL teachers and schools around the world.
    Teaching English.ca-- is a website dedicated to help those searching for ESL teaching positions around the world and for organizations to advertise such job vacancies.
