Water Testing Information for Tourism Operators
The Department of Tourism welcomes you to our Water Quality Web Site.
As Tourism Operators, we know you take great pride in providing quality services to your guests – and each of you are, essentially, good will ambassadors to our Island visitors.
In partnership with Quality Tourism Services, the Environmental Health division of the Department of Health, and the Water Management Division of the Department of Environment and Energy, we offer you basic information on how to ensure you maintain a clean, safe supply of drinking water for your guests.
If contamination does occur, it is essential that you put the proper steps in place to minimize any potential ill effects to your guests.
Tourism Industry Act Regulation: Tests of Drinking Water
The Tourism Industry Act regulates the requirements for regular water testing by tourism operators.
"Where the drinking water provided to guests to a tourism establishment is not obtained from a municipal water system; the tourism operator of a tourism establishment shall cause the drinking water to be tested, every 3 months or part thereof during a calendar year that the tourism establishment is receiving guests, by a lab accredited by the Standards Council of Canada."
On PEI the only accredited lab for this purpose is the PEI Analytical Lab which is part of the Water Management Division, Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry. Accreditation is the formal recognition of the competance of a laboratory to carry out specific tests by an independant body. By providing for ongoing independant review of the laboratory quality system, accreditation results in improved performance by the laboratory.
