Conservation Programs and ToolsConservation ProgramsCanadians across the country in different capacities (individuals, charitable organizations, local governments) initiate projects to protect and conserve ‘At Risk’ species and their habitats. The Habitat Stewardship Program assists with funding these initiatives. Frequently, private or corporate landowners want to conserve the natural value of their property in perpetuity. Ecologically-sensitive land can be protected in perpetuity by registering a conservation easement or donating the land to a charitable organization or government. Some allowed activities can be written into conservation easements. Donors of these ecological gifts are eligible for special tax benefits through the Ecological Gifts Program. Each of the three prairie provinces has a five-year action plan with specific goals and objectives for conserving and sustaining native-prairie and parkland ecosystems.
