Conservation Programs and Tools

Conservation Programs

Canadians across the country in different capacities (individuals, charitable organizations, local governments) initiate projects to protect and conserve ‘At Risk’ species and their habitats. The Habitat Stewardship Program assists with funding these initiatives.

Frequently, private or corporate landowners want to conserve the natural value of their property in perpetuity. Ecologically-sensitive land can be protected in perpetuity by registering a conservation easement or donating the land to a charitable organization or government. Some allowed activities can be written into conservation easements. Donors of these ecological gifts are eligible for special tax benefits through the Ecological Gifts Program.

Each of the three prairie provinces has a five-year action plan with specific goals and objectives for conserving and sustaining native-prairie and parkland ecosystems.

Conservation Tools

This guide is to assist prairie landowners with their efforts to conserve grasslands, however, it also provides general background information. It describes the types of grasslands in the Canadian prairies, ways to identify plant species, and includes sketches of characteristic grasses, forbs and shrubs. The guide outlines ecological approaches to managing grasslands, methods for assessing grassland health, and effective management techniques including restoration.

This guide is to assist prairie landowners with their efforts to conserve raptors, however, it also provides general background information. It describes specific steps for reducing harmful impacts to raptors and their habitats, and the benefits to landowners of having raptors on their property. The guide also explains the types, appearance and ecology of prairie and parkland raptors.
