Are you unsure of exactly how labour market information (LMI) can help you? The following scenarios or examples will show you the potential of LMI and how you can use it to make better decisions.

Judy is a student who is considering a career in Nursing.

John is an Electronic Engineering Technician who is having difficulty finding employment in his home community.

Li is an unemployed carpenter who has heard that there is a major construction project starting in the area.

Elizabeth is an employer looking to establish a business in the area.

Ivan is a Pharmacist and wants to immigrate to Canada.


Judy is a high school student who is considering a career in Nursing. She is wondering if there will be opportunities for Nurses in her area when she finishes University.

Judy can:


Examine the Job Descriptions and Job and Skills Requirements for Nurses to make sure this is an occupation that she is really interested in and that she has the skills to do well.

Review the Employment Prospects section to determine if the employment potential is good for nurses in her local area.

Check out the Who Hires section for a list of employers who have hired nurses in the past. She may want to set up an informational interview with one of these employers to learn more about the occupation and to find out about their future hiring needs.

If Judy still has questions, she can contact the nearest Service Canada Centre office for assistance.

John is an Electronic Engineering Technician who is having difficulty finding employment in his home community. He has already checked out Human Resources and Skills Development Canada's Job Bank and the local newspapers to determine if there are any current job vacancies posted for Electronic Engineering Technicians. Although John would like stay in the local area, he is willing to travel to find work.

John can:

Search the Who Hires section to get a list of employers who have hired Electronic Engineering Technicians in the past in his local community. This way John can make sure he has exhausted the opportunities in his local area. If he decides that it is time to expand the area for his job search, he can then get a list of employers in the community that he is willing to re-locate to.

Find out where Electronic Engineering Technicians are in demand by using the Employment Prospects section.

Use the Wages & Salaries section to see what the current wage rate for Electronic Engineering Technicians is in the town he is considering relocating to.

Find out what is happening in other communities by reading the Labour Market Bulletin for that area. These Bulletins can be found in the About the Local Labour Market section and will provide the latest news on local industries and occupations.

Check out the NewsFlash section to see if there are any reports of companies expanding or getting new contracts that might improve his chances of finding employment.

Li can:

Check the NewsFlash for information on major activities or projects that are planned in the area. If Li finds information on a project, she can contact the particular company involved.

Visit the Who Hires section and obtain a list of potential employers who have hired carpenters in the past. She can then contact these employers directly to discuss possible job opportunities.

If Li is still having difficulty or has had no success with her job search, she can contact the nearest Service Canada Centre for assistance.

Elizabeth is an employer looking to establish a business in the area. She is looking for current wage rates, a list of similar employers located in the area and some general information on the local economy.

Elizabeth can:

Visit the Wages & Salaries section to get an idea of the current wages for the specific occupations that she would employ.

Review the Who Hires section to get a list of companies that have in the past, hired occupations that are the same as those she would employ. This information would give her an idea of the existing competition in the area.

Check out the Employment Prospects section to determine the employment potential for the occupations that she would employ. A surplus of workers could mean that Elizabeth would have a large number of workers to choose from.

If Elizabeth has any questions or concerns, she can contact the Service Canada Centre in the area that she is considering establishing her business.

Ivan is a pharmacist and wants to immigrate to Canada, but is not sure what information he needs or where to start his research.

Ivan can:

Review the Job Descriptions and Job and Skill Requirements for a Pharmacist. He must read the main duties and employment requirements for the position very carefully. By reviewing this information he can make sure that the description matches the job that he does in the country where he is currently living.

NOTE:

Job titles can be misleading and the name given to a particular occupation in one country may be very different in another country.

A pharmacist coming to Canada must have his / her credentials (education and training) assessed before being allowed to work in the occupation. More detailed information on various organizations to contact to have foreign credentials recognized in Canada can be found on the Work Destinations Web site.

Ivan can also:

Find out where Pharmacists are in demand by using the Employment Prospects section.

Use the Wages & Salaries section to see the current wage rate for Pharmacists is in the various communities he is considering relocating.

Check out the "Community Information" in the About the Local Labour Market section to get a general idea of the communities he may wish to re-locate.
