It is the responsibility of Transport Canada's Policy Group to advise the Minister of Transport and senior management on how transportation policy issues fit within the broader government agenda, which currently includes: national safety, internal/external trade, regulatory reform, a knowledge-based economy/society, and the environment.

More specifically the role of the Policy Group is to develop, recommend and coordinate modal and multi-modal policies. Essentially the group offers advice, analysis and data on transportation issues, system performance and stakeholder positions. Advice on policy options is based on efficiency, competitiveness, safety and security, environmental sustainability, and inter-modal integration.

The Policy Group fulfils its role through a multi-modal program of policy analysis, briefings, coordination, consultations, evaluation and economic analysis, which develops and utilizes necessary data, forecasts, models, research, and intelligence to meet the department's objectives.
