Prevention of bird strikes begins at the airport, as the majority of bird
strike incidents occur within the airport environment during the takeoff,
climb, final approach, and landing phases of flight. Transport Canada policy
is to regard all wildlife on airports as potential hazards to airport and
aircraft safety.
It is the role of the Wildlife Section within the Aerodromes and Air
Navigation Branch to oversee the management of wildlife throughout the Canadian
aviation industry, and to develop regulations and standards pertaining to
wildlife management at airports. Furthermore, the Section maintains the database
of wildlife incidents that occur in Canada, and develops and distributes
education and awareness material throughout the industry. The Section is also
actively involved in the planning and implementation of a Bird Strike Committee
USA/Canada conference each year that is open to all stakeholders.
The primary goals of this bird-hazard Web site are to:
- Raise the awareness level of the bird/wildlife hazard issue within the aviation community
- Provide access to a variety of solutions and improve the reporting of wildlife incidents so the problem can be managed more effectively
