After significant growth of 5.3% in 2003, employment in the ICT sector kept growing in 2004 but at a much slower rate of 0.8%, 570,0001 workers.
This growth represents only 4,000 new jobs from the previous year and is below the 1.8% employment growth observed at the national level.
Employment in the ICT services industries increased by 1.4% in 2004. The largest gains were observed in telecommunications services (3,500 new jobs) and software (1,500 new jobs), while the strongest growth rate occurred in cable and other program distribution (+6.2%). However, employment did not show any growth in the computer systems design industry and declined in the ISP industry.
After major decreases in the early 2000's and a slight recovery in 2003, employment in the ICT manufacturing industries picked up in 2004, up by 2.0% to 103,900 workers. This is essentially due to substantial gains in the wireless communications equipment industry (1,700 new workers or 13.2% growth) as employment declined or remained relatively stable in most other ICT manufacturing industries.
Employment in the ICT services industries amounted to 387,700 workers in 2004, the highest level ever. This number includes 80,000 self-employed, mostly in the computer systems design industry. All together, the ICT services industries represent close to 70% of total ICT sector employment. After a slight increase in 2003, the number of workers in the ICT wholesaling, rental and leasing industries declined by 3.9% in 2004, to 78,600.
Employment in the ICT sector grew at a CAGR2
of 3.7% over the 1997-2004 period, compared to 2.2% in the Canadian economy. The sector accounted for 3.6% of Canada’s total employment in 2004.
