Northern Rivers Ecosystem Initiative

The Northern Rivers Ecosystem Initiative (NREI) was established by the Governments of Canada, Alberta and Northwest Territories in response to the recommendations of the Northern River Basins Study. Through NREI, science teams increased our knowledge of priorities related to river systems in northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Priorities for NREI included pollution prevention, endocrine disruption in fish, the quality of drinking water, and improvements to monitoring of environmental effects of human activity. Studies also considered the effects of land use, flow regulation and climate change on aquatic ecosystems. This five-year initiative, which concluded in 2003, was administered by a Steering Committee with representatives from Canada, Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
