Fire Protection Engineering and Inspection Services for Major Public Band Buildings in First Nation Communities

The Labour Branch, within Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC), provides specialized fire protection engineering and inspection services for major public band buildings and schools in First Nation communities. These services assist First Nations to protect, conserve and minimize fire risks to life and property.  The services are provided with the approval or at the request of the Chief and Band Council or their designates.

Service Delivery

Fire protection services are delivered through regional and district offices of the Labour Branch. They affect major band operated buildings accessible to and/or used by the public including schools, band offices, day care centres, fire halls, student residences, teacherages, community and cultural centres, arenas, recreation halls, indoor swimming pools, youth and senior citizen centres.

Fire protection engineering services include the review of building plans, specifications and shop drawings, and on-site inspections to make sure that building design, construction, and reconstruction conform to applicable fire safety codes and standards.

Fire inspection services include the periodic examination of buildings to determine whether construction, maintenance, and operation meet applicable fire safety requirements.

Fire Inspection Cycle

For Schools: every 2.5 years
For other buildings: every 5.0 years

After every engineering review or inspection, a written report describing deficiencies and recommendations along with negotiated dates for correction, will be sent to the Chief and Band Council for action.

Further information may be obtained by contacting the nearest office of the Labour Branch, Human Resources and Social Development Canada or by going  to "related links" for more information on fire prevention.
