Filing an Assignment or Licence

An assignment

An assignment occurs when you transfer part, or all, of your rights to another party. The assignment may be for the whole term of the copyright, or for a certain part of it.

A licence

A licence gives someone else permission to use your work under certain conditions, but you still retain ownership. You have not given up your rights.

To register an assignment or licence in the Copyright Register, please send the original contract, a certified copy, a photocopy or a copy by fax of the agreement between parties to the Copyright Office. The Office will retain a copy of the documentation and return the originals, if applicable, with a certificate of registration.

Payments can be made using:
  • American Express, MasterCard and VISA
  • CIPO Deposit Account

This is not a debit card account. Please do not include any bank account information on the application. Contact the Client Service Centre for more information.
