Doppler Weather Radar

Doppler weather radar uses advanced signal processing and provides information which helps meteorologists detect and predict severe weather more effectively. Doppler information helps forecasters provide more accurate and timely warnings, giving citizens, businesses and emergency response organizations more time to prepare for potentially dangerous weather conditions.

Images from conventional (non-Doppler) radar only give the location and the rate at which precipitation is falling. Doppler data provides the forecaster with information on the movement of precipitation within a storm. This data is analyzed for signs of dangerous weather conditions.

  1. A brief history of the development of weather radar technologies.

  2. Answers to concerns about health and safety matters.

  3. How Doppler Weather Radar can help improve public safety.

  4. Weather-related publications available through the Meteorological Service of Canada.
