What is NOC?

NOC is short for National Occupational Classification. It is a 4 digit job classification system used by many government agencies and employers to classify all occupations in Canada. All the occupations on the CanLearn, Job Futures and the Labour Market Information Web sites use the NOC code system.

Why is this important to you?

Three reasons:
  • The NOC category gives you immediate information on an occupation
  • You can discover new occupations you might never have known about
  • It is much easier to find occupations that interest you

For example - all the occupations within Art, Culture, Recreation & Sport start with a NOC Code of 5. Business, Finance and Administration NOC codes all start with a NOC Code of 1. This makes it a lot easier to find the occupations that suit you.
