Regional and Bilateral Initiatives
Canada-Dominican Republic - Free Trade Discussions
The Government of Canada agreed in 2002 to explore the possibility
of a free trade agreement with the Dominican Republic. The Minister
for International Trade launched extensive domestic consultations
with business, citizen-based organizations and individual Canadians,
as well as with the provincial and territorial governments, to obtain
advice and views on priorities, objectives and concerns to help
define the possible scope of this initiative. (For more information,
see the News
Release and the Canada Gazette
Notice of November 2, 2002)
Status of the Discussions
Officials from Canada and the Dominican Republic have met several times to
identify issue-areas that could be pursued in a possible future
negotiation. The most recent meeting was held in July 2003. No date
has yet been scheduled for the next meeting.
A free trade agreement with the Dominican Republic holds the potential
to improve our trade and political ties with this country and contribute
to the shared goal of deepening economic integration within the
Hemisphere.
