8th FTAA Ministerial Meeting - Miami, Florida, November 20, 2003

Ministers responsible for Trade in the Americas met in Miami, Florida, on November 20, 2003 for the 8th Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) Ministerial Meeting. This meeting marked the half-way point in the final phase of the negotiations, which are scheduled to conclude by January 2005. The Ministerial was co-chaired by the United States and Brazil.

In Miami, the Trade Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to conclude a comprehensive and balanced agreement that will expand prosperity and foster economic growth throughout the hemisphere. They also agreed to release the third version of the negotiating text in the four official languages of the FTAA (English, French, Spanish and Portuguese). In addition, the Ministers acknowledged the need to respect and value cultural diversity; supported additional progress related to the Hemispheric Cooperation Program; and expressed interest in creating a civil society consultative committee within the institutional architecture of the FTAA. For more information on the results of the Miami Meeting, please read the Ministerial Declaration.
