Results of the Informal Consultations in Buenos Aires, March 31 and April 1, 2004

Canada and a group of other FTAA participants took part in informal consultations in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 31 and April 1, 2004 to discuss the preparation of guidance to the FTAA negotiating groups in accordance with the new framework for the FTAA agreed by Ministers in Miami last November. The participants discussed the development of a common and balanced set of rights and obligations applicable to all counties across the nine issue areas, as well as the development of procedures for plurilateral negotiations among the countries who wish to undertake additional liberalisation and disciplines within the FTAA. Interim Results of the 17th Trade Negotiations Committee Meeting - Puebla, Mexico (February 2-6, 2004)

In accordance with Ministers' instructions outlined in the November 2003 Miami Ministerial Declaration, the 17th FTAA Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) met in Puebla, Mexico to develop a common and balanced set of rights and obligations applicable to all countries, as well as procedures for the negotiation of plurilateral commitments. Although the negotiators made progress on the Ministers' instructions, countries agreed that more time would be required for the TNC to complete its task. As such, the decision was taken to recess the meeting and reconvene in March 2004. For more information, please click on the link below:

Results of the 16th TNC Meeting - Miami, USA (November 15-18, 2003)

Results of the 15th Trade Negotiations Committee Meeting - Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago (September 29 - October 3, 2003)

At the 15th FTAA Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) meeting, agreement was reached on new instructions for the FTAA negotiating groups and committees in an official document entitled "Guidance and Instructions." Results of the 14th Trade Negotiations Committee Meeting - San Salvador, El Salvador, July 7-11, 2003

At the 14th FTAA Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) meeting, Canada presented a concept paper that addresses environmental considerations in the FTAA. In addition, the TNC approved the derestriction of the agenda of the "Second Thematic Meeting with the Participation of the Hemispheric Civil Society". Results of the 13th Trade Negotiations Committee Meeting - Puebla, Mexico, April 8-11, 2003

The FTAA Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) reached an agreement on new instructions to various FTAA negotiating groups and committees, which are consolidated in an official document titled “Guidance and Instructions to the FTAA entities” (FTAA.TNC/22). Based on a Canadian proposal, this document was derestricted and posted on the official FTAA website. In addition, a civil society event was held on the margins of the TNC meeting, which provided an opportunity for the FTAA Vice-Ministers to hear first-hand the main conclusions and recommendations stemming from the event.
