Use of abbreviations has been avoided but there are some that are in common use for vehicle safety and bus safety regulations and are used in this report:

CMVSS

Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards – the standards in the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

CSA

Canadian Standards Association – which has its CSA D250 School Bus Standard adopted by many provincial governments.

ECE

Economic Commission for Europe - a United Nations body that administers international agreements on vehicle standards.

FHWA

Federal Highway Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation which administers motor carrier safety programs.

FMVSS

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards – the U.S. standards under the U.S. Motor Vehicle and Traffic Safety Act.

GVWR

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - defined in the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations to indicate the overall loaded mass of a vehicle.

MVSS

CMVSS and FMVSS collectively.

NHTSA

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation which administers FMVSSs.

NSC

National Safety Code for Motor Carriers administered by the federal/ provincial/territorial Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators.
