Listed on the Second Priority Substances List (PSL2)
Concluded to have impacts on the environment

Releases of radionuclides from nuclear facilities (impact on non-human biota) is one of 25 substances or groups of substances placed on the Second Priority Substances List (PSL2) to determine whether they posed a significant risk to the environment in Canada or to the health of Canadians.

Assessment Status and Conclusion

Environment Canada has completed the ecological science assessment of releases of radionuclides from nuclear facilities (impact on non-human biota).

A Draft Assessment Report was made available for a 60-day public comment period from July 29 to September 27, 2000. Comments were considered, and the report was revised accordingly.

The revised assessment report concludes that releases of uranium and uranium compounds contained in effluent from uranium mines and mills are entering the environment in quantities or concentrations that may have a harmful effect on the environment and its biological diversity.

The Final Ministerial recommendations regarding this substance was published in the Canada Gazette on September 2, 2006.
