Overview
Throughout the eight-day Forum, participants met in 351 sessions organized around 38 interlocking themes and participated in five Regional Days. The themes included a range of topics related to water, including climate; supply, sanitation, hygiene, and water pollution; cultural diversity; nature and environment; cities; governance; floods; water resources management and basin management; peace; agriculture and food; poverty; gender; financing water infrastructure; and dams and sustainable development.
During the five Regional Days, sessions were held on water issues related to Africa, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and Europe.
In addition, the Forum included a set of panel sessions, a Water Fair and Festival, Water Expo, the Citizen's House of Water, cultural events, and award ceremonies. The Forum concluded with the issuing of a preliminary Summary Forum Statement.
Delegates to the Ministerial Conference convened to discuss a Ministerial Declaration and five themes in subgroups: safe drinking water and sanitation; water for food and development; water pollution prevention and ecosystem conservation; disaster mitigation and risk management; and water resource management and benefit sharing.
A separate meeting specifically for agriculture ministers invited from 36 countries was held to discuss water, food, and agriculture.
The Ministerial Conference concluded with the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration and the launch of a Portfolio of Water Actions.
