In the Trade and Environment Branch, we see Environment Canada as a leader in influencing economic policy decisions to ensure that they reflect the values of sustainable development

Our Purpose

In an interdependent and integrated global community, the Trade and Environment Branch (TEB) recognizes that Canadian policies cannot be made in isolation, and that trade, investment and environment policies can and should be mutually supportive. Therefore, in support of Environment Canada's goal to make sustainable development a reality in Canada, TEB's mission is to help shape sound policy decisions by integrating environmental, trade and investment perspectives in the policy development process.

What we do

Our goal is to ensure that trade, investment and environment policies are mutually supportive. As a group of experts in this area, we strive to achieve this goal by:

  • Helping to shape environmental regulations and policies in a manner that is sensitive to Canada's trade obligations;
  • Working to integrate environmental considerations into multilateral, regional and bilateral trade and investment negotiations; and,
  • Providing advice on the environmental implications of trade and investment policies.
