Air Transport of Engines, Internal Combustion

Introduction

This notice is directed to shippers of machines or other apparatuses, incorporating an internal combustion engines and air operators.

Regulations governing the transport of Engines, internal combustion

The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR) and by reference the International Civil Aviation Organization Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air (ICAO TI’s) regulate the handling, offering for transport, transporting and importing of dangerous goods to, from and within Canada.

Air transport of Engines, Internal Combustion that have never contained dangerous goods

Machines or other apparatuses, incorporating an internal combustion engine, the fuel tank of which has never contained any fuel, the fuel system of which is completely empty of fuel, are not regulated for transport by air.

Note: Internal combustion engine initial start up testing at factory may leave dangerous goods residues in the fuel system. Please read information below.

Engines, Internal Combustion Emptied of Dangerous Goods

Engines that have contained dangerous goods may be offered for transport by passenger or cargo aircraft in accordance with the TDGR, if adequate measures have been taken to ‘nullify’ or remove the hazard present.

Remember that an odour is not a good indication of the presence or absence of a dangerous substance and/or hazard.

‘Nullifying’ the Dangerous Goods Hazard

Flammable Gas

Engines, internal combustion containing or that have contained Flammable Gas may be purged of that gas by running the engine until it stops and flushing the system with compressed nitrogen gas to remove residues in the fuel system.

Flammable Liquid

Engines, internal combustion containing or that have contained Flammable Liquid may be rinsed with a non-regulated substance miscible with the flammable liquid (e.g. motor oil). Repeat the rinse a few times and verify for absence of flammable liquid vapours with a flammable gas detector.

Air transport of Engines, Internal combustion, UN3166 containing dangerous goods

Engines, Internal combustion UN3166 containing Flammable Gas, are prohibited in passenger aircraft. They must be offered for transport by cargo aircraft in accordance with Part 12 of the TDGR and the ICAO TI’s.

Engines, Internal combustion UN3166 containing Flammable Liquid, may be offered for transport in passenger aircraft or cargo aircraft in accordance with Part 12 of the TDGR and the ICAO TI’s.
