The YRTE members enjoyed their visit to the Environmental Technology Centre (ETC). They were especially interested in learning more about the centre’s focus on science and technology for environmental protection.
After their visit, the YRTE members met the Director of the Environmental affairs Branch for a presentation on the Greening Government Initiatives at EC. The success stories and challenges highlighted were very insightful, allowing YRTE members to gain a better understanding of the Department’s position on its “Greening Government” Programs and Policies.
The YRTE also met with Assistant Deputy Minister for the Human Resources and Service Innovation Service Cassie Doyle. She presented the Knowledge in the Service of Canadians agenda and the issues particular to youth engagement within the Department. A good discussion followed on client engagement and EC service issues.
Finally, the YRTE met with Minister Anderson on Parliament Hill. They brought forward 3 recommendations to the Minister:
- Youth engagement - The YRTE members asked the Minister to consider integrating a youth position on the NRTEE and facilitating the link between the YRTE and the NRTEE.
- Climate Change - The YRTE members presented their proposal for a Youth Engagement Strategy on Climate Change. The Minister acknowledged the value of a project to facilitate a connection with Canadian Youth and agreed to forward the youth engagement strategy to the Climate Change Bureau.
- Environmental Bill of Rights - A great discussion resulted from this recommendation and the Minister proposed to send the YRTE background information on the issue and proposed that YRTE discuss this issue further and raise the issue at their next meeting.
The YRTE used their last face-to-face meeting this year to prepare their final report. This report completes their mandate as an advisory body to Environment Canada for 2002-03. The 2003-04 YRTE members will be meeting for the first time in fall 2003.
