Since June, Canada’s federal government has been examining the corporate social responsibility record of Canadian mining, oil and gas companies operating abroad. The PDAC has been involved in this process and recently submitted two papers, the first with background information, analysis and recommendations on the practice of Canadian exploration and mining companies abroad, and the second on international law and CSR regulation. In preparation for the association’s strategic planning process in the autumn, members were asked to submit their views on the PDAC by completing a survey. Here are the results.
November 16, 2006
The PDAC has drafted four operational statements for low-risk activities: dock construction and removal; bridge construction and removal; camp setup and teardown; and trenching have been submitted to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). These statements, once approved, will eliminate the need to seek approval from DFO for these activities. A fifth statement covering drilling will be posted shortly. Past president John Larche was honoured today by his home town, Timmins, Ontario. The Timmins and District Hospital officially re-named the Imaging and Cardiopulmonary Department in celebration of 20 years of volunteer time and financial contributions by John. Executive director Tony Andrews brought best wishes from the PDAC and delivered this citation.

The PDAC submitted its strategy to ensure the long-term competitiveness of Canada’s mineral industry to the House of Commons Finance Committee’s pre-budget consultations. Full text.

In a presentation to the House of Commons Finance Committee, the PDAC called for funding for the Cooperative Geological Mapping Strategies and a renewal of the “super” flow-through program. Full presentation.
