Press conference to address Prime Minister Paul Martin's upcoming visit to China
for Canada-China relations Coalition of Canadian NGO's will present their recommendations

January 12, 2004 -- In advance of Paul Martin's first visit to China as Prime Minister, a coalition of Canadian nongovernmental organizations will outline recommendations as to steps that should be taken to advance human rights protection in China. Trade cannot be allowed to overshadow human rights during this visit. The Prime Minister has an opportunity to turn a new page in Canada's approach to pressing an agenda of human rights reform in China.
The NGO coalition includes Amnesty International, Rights and Democracy, Canadian Labour Congress, Toronto Association for Democracy in China, Uyghur Canadian Association, Canada Tibet Committee, Falun Dafa Association of Canada, PEN Canada, and Democracy China Ottawa. They will present a joint letter to the Prime Minister, as well as their individual briefs.
