Scope and Application
Purpose ^
As signatory to the Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW)
Convention of 1978 as amended in 1995, Canada is obliged to ensure that
seafarers responsible to provide medical first aid and medical care on board
Canadian ships, are suitably trained and qualified to render such assistance.
Scope ^
The STCW78 Convention as amended in 1995 by regulation VI/1, VI/4 and
sections A-VI/1, A-VI/4 of the mandatory Code specify the requirements of
minimum standards of competence in medical first aid and medical care.
Effective Date ^
The training program as outlined in this Transport Canada, Marine Safety
Publication (TP 13008) received Canadian Marine Advisory Council (CMAC)
approval in May, 1997 and its contents became effective with the coming into
force of the Marine Certification Regulations on July 30, 1997.
Authority ^
The Marine Certification Regulations Section 6 (SOR/97-391) made
pursuant to the Canada Shipping Act (R.S.AC.1985, c.s-9) as amended.
