Toporama – Map Sources

Toporama uses data from many sources for the topographic maps in the Atlas of Canada. These topographic maps mainly show data from the 1:250 000 and 1:50 000 National Topographic Databases and are seamlessly linked together. They originally come from over 13 000 individual maps.

The maps also show data from the Atlas of Canada’s Framework datasets at scales of 1:30 000 000, 1:7 500 000 and 1:1 000 000.

The National road network (NRN) and the Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) are from the GeoBase Portal, a new federal, provincial and territorial government initiative. In addition the satellite image, CanImage, is also offered. If you would like more specific information about the currency or other details of any of this data, please go the Map Sources section.

Atlas of Canada Framework Data
The Atlas of Canada framework layers include rivers, lakes, administrative boundaries, populated places, roads and rail lines. The 1:7 500 000 and the 1:1 000 000 scale data are the primary base frameworks used for all Atlas of Canada 6th Edition online maps. They are also available at 1:30 000 000 and 1:2 000 000.

Topographic Features – National Topographic Database
The topographic features are from the 1:250 000 and 1:50 000 National Topographic Databases and are seamlessly linked together. They originally come from over 13 000 individual maps. The currency of the information, from these source maps, varies so not all features shown will be up-to-date.

National Road Network (NRN) – GeoBase
The National Road Network (NRN) comes from the GeoBase Portal, a new federal, provincial and territorial government initiative. The NRN offers over 1 000 000 kilometers of accurate up-to-date centerline road network data produced mainly with field driven Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) technology . The NRN is the representation of a continuous accurate centerline for all non-restricted use roads in Canada (5 meters or more in width, drivable and no barriers denying access).

Satellite Image – CanImage
CanImage is an image composed of three spectral bands originating from resampled Landsat 7 orthoimages. Data acquisition dates can vary between scenes, so the images may not contain current features such as new roads and urban development. Spectral bands have a pixel size of 15 m.

Elevation Image – Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) – GeoBase
The Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) comes from the GeoBase Portal, a new federal, provincial and territorial government initiative. The CDED consists of an ordered array of ground elevations at regularly spaced intervals. The source digital data for CDED at scales of 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 is extracted from the hypsographic and hydrographic elements of the National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) or various scaled positional data acquired from the provinces and territories.
